When asked to comment, La Rue said, "Many college students don't think that it's a big deal if they are caught with drugs, particularly if they haven't had a prior offense. However, the consequences can be quite severe such as hefty fines and possible jail time, even a driver’s license suspension."

"But this doesn’t have to be the case if you follow a few guidelines and get in touch with the right representation.”

A possession offense can get a college student in trouble not only with the university, but also with the law.

That being the case, La Rue says that it's essential to stay calm when arrested by the police.

“It’s all too easy to allow your emotions to go unchecked when you realize you’ve gotten in trouble with the police. However, while in an emotional state, you might do or say something in the presence of law enforcement such as resisting arrest that could lead to additional charges,” he said.

Only giving the bare minimum information is also a good strategy when dealing with officers.

When asked to elaborate, La Rue said, “As a college student, you might think that the police will go easy on you. However, they – and the law – see you as an adult. This means that police and other officials will likely attempt to get incriminating statements from you.”

"When you're being held by law enforcement or other officers, all you need to do is to provide your name and age and insist on your right to speak with your attorney. Providing more than basic identifying information can further damage your chances of receiving a good outcome," he said.

La Rue was quick to add that a drug offense doesn’t have to ruin the chances of having a bright future.

"The first thing you should do after being charged is to contact a seasoned criminal defense attorney. They will be able to advise you on your options, rights, and help get you the best result possible."

"Understandably, not many students are well versed in the legal landscape around possession charges and tend to choose the quickest route, but it's important to do your research in finding a qualified attorney."

With a seasoned and competent attorney, La Rue said, "you can potentially get your charges reduced or dropped completely. It's even possible that the incident will not go on your record after reaching an agreement with the court."

Without experienced and capable legal help, “additional considerations of possible discipline by the college student conduct review board or like administrative body can have devastating consequences for the seemingly most minor drug offenses or involvement,” La Rue counseled.
