Building London: Five Skyscrapers Set to Change the Face of Britain’s Capital

Five new skyscrapers are set to change London’s skyline once again.

September 19, 2019 / /

London, the capital city and largest city in the UK has the largest municipal population in the European Union. Since the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, the city has undergone significant major redevelopment in all areas, driven by international investment and the need for more housing and commercial space. But despite London’s size, much of the regeneration work going on is focused on the City of London, London’s ancient core and central business district. This area is just 1.1 square miles in size.

The London of today is almost unrecognisable compared to twenty years ago. Several superstructures currently in development across the city promise to further enhance the cityscape and provide an art-like setting once construction is complete.

22 Bishopsgate, a 62-storey skyscraper described as ‘London’s vertical village’ will include adaptable workspaces, leisure facilities, a creative centre, gym, retreat and even a nightclub. 52 Lime Street, known as the Scalpel, will be 36 storeys high with 37,000 square feet of commercial space, shops and restaurants. 8 Bishopsgate Tower is a £300 million project set to be completed in 2022, with 51 storeys of mixed-use space within a striking series of stacked blocks and terraces. 80 Fenchurch Street is similarly revolutionary in its design, which is subdivided into 15 x 15m bays with rooftop terraces, though it is just 15 storeys tall. And finally, 1 Undershaft, due to be complete by 2026 and standing 10 metres above the mighty 22 Bishopsgate. Informally known as The Trellis due to its external cross bracing, 1 Undershaft will be the tallest building within the City of London at 73 storeys tall boasting the highest public viewing gallery in London.

Nigel Bennett, Technical Director at See Brilliance, said:

“London has gone through massive architectural change since the early nineties. I’ve seen new buildings go up each year and almost complete redevelopment in areas like Vauxhall and Canary Wharf. Some of these places look unrecognisable compared with twenty years ago.

“But it’s having a positive impact; the ongoing development has put London on the international map for business. Companies want to establish themselves here partly because of the talent pool but also because the architecture is stunning, and the commercial opportunities are vast.

“It’s positive to see sustainability and carbon footprint at the heart of some of these breath-taking buildings. 22 Bishopsgate was designed to achieve a 25% carbon saving, partly due to its triple glazed ultra-efficient façade. The building also has its own secure bike park to encourage green commuting.

“See Brilliance has been working in commercial restorative cleaning for over thirty years and has undertaken work on several buildings in the commercial centres of Lime Street and Bishopsgate. We specialise in restoring the appearance of buildings, many of which have suffered from the general pollution of London’s inner-city atmosphere as well as contaminants from the ongoing building works themselves.

“From restoring the appearance of a building’s façade exterior to removing concrete residue two-hundred feet from the ground, we’ve worked on some of the biggest and most challenging. It’s never a dull day!”
