Trailblazing Black Man Rises to the Top against all Odds

With self-reliance and through force of will, this immigrant becomes a pillar in his field.

Pittsburg, Oct 16, 2019 (Issuewire.com) - The struggle that Black people have in an intolerant world is well known. And being a Black immigrant could prove even more difficult for one!

In Defining Moments of a Free Man from a Black Stream, Dr. Frank L. Douglas shares his story of difficulty and eventual success being a man of color in a predominantly unaccepting white world. Dr. Douglas was born in Guyana as the eldest of five children in an impoverished household. Despite the disadvantages he faced, he strove to excel in his studies, eventually earning a scholarship from the Fulbright Program in 1963, which brought him to the United States, where he had his first taste of blatant racism and discrimination. Unfazed and with the support of some key individuals, he continued to carve success for himself, earning both an MD and a Ph.D. from the prestigious Cornell University. And now with this book, he hopes to inspire others to persevere and never back down from a fight, since it was possible for a young boy from Guyana, a small developing country, to achieve the pinnacle of pharmaceutical excellence.

Dr. Douglas founded the Center for Biomedical Innovation at MIT and led the Austen Biomedical Institute associated with the University of Akron. He also spearheaded the Research and Development arm of such companies as Aventis (now Sanofi) and was instrumental in the release of landmark drugs including Lantus, Allegra, and Actonel. Among his awards are being named Global Pharmaceutical Research and Development Director of the Year, 2001 and 2004; Black History Maker in 2007; Geoffrey Beene Foundation and GQ Magazine's Rock Star of Science in 2010; and receiving the Caribbean Heritage Award for Entrepreneurship in 2011.

His work, which was recently recommended by the United States Review of Books, will be exhibited at the Ottawa Book Expo to be held at the Horticulture Building in Lansdowne Park, Ottawa, Ontario, on the 20th of October, 2019 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Authors Press booth number AZ01.
