With vast experience in neurosurgery, Dr. Shannon specializes in providing surgical treatments for a range of conditions that affect the nervous system, with the scope of his practice focusing on: stereotactic cranial surgery tumors; cranial surgery for hematomas, abscesses, strokes, and aneurysms; complex complete spine surgery with instrumentation and fusions, including artificial cervical disc replacement, microdiscectomy - cervical and lumbar, anterior cervical fusions, minimally invasive spine surgery, endoscopic minimally invasive carpal tunnel surgery, and spinal cord tumors. He has been in private solo practice in neurosurgery since 1985, and also works with his son, Dr. Craig Shannon, Chief of Neurosurgery at Vassar Medical Center.

The doctor is board-certified through the American Board of Neurological Surgery, whose broad aim is to encourage the study, improve the practice, elevate the standards, and advance the science of neurological surgery and thereby serve the cause of public health. He is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology (FAAN), a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), and a Fellow of the American College of Medical Quality (FACMQ). 

Prior to embarking on his professional journey, Dr. Shannon graduated with his medical degree from the University of Toledo College of Medicine and completed a General Surgery Residency at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio. He continued on and completed his residencies in neurology and neurosurgery at NYU Bellevue.

Neurosurgery is the medical specialty concerned with the prevention, diagnosis, surgical treatment, and rehabilitation of disorders which affect any portion of the nervous system including the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, and extra-cranial cerebrovascular system. Outside of the office, Dr. Shannon enjoys traveling to Hawaii and spending time with his wife, Linda, and their three daughters, eight grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
