The Rocky McElhaney Law Firm is thrilled to announce they have awarded this year’s Max McElhaney Memorial Scholarship to Anaya Avila. Ms. Avila attends Nova Southeastern University (NSU) in Florida.
The admissions officer at NSU called Ms. Avila “a motivated, compassionate and brilliant student” with “positive energy and enthusiasm,” and Rocky McElhaney added his own personal kudos. “We could not be more pleased to offer this scholarship to such a deserving young woman,” he said.

About scholarship winner Anaya Avila
Growing up in a single-parent home in Ohio, Ms. Avila helped take care of her younger twin brothers, both of whom are autistic. Even with many family challenges, she managed to excel in school and apply to nearly 30 colleges and universities across the country. With the support of her aunts, Ms. Avila was able to successfully navigate the financial aid system and travel to Florida, where she met with the admissions office at NSU to secure her place not only at the university, but as a member of the Honors College.
Ms. Avila plans to become an educator and give back to the community, helping other students like her and her brothers secure the resources they need for higher education.
About the Max McElhaney Memorial Educational Scholarship
The Max McElhaney Memorial Educational Scholarship was founded in honor of Max McElhaney, the late uncle of firm founder Rocky McElhaney. The Firm awards $2,500 every year to a full-time student enrolled at an accredited college or university, who is majoring in English or History. Applicants must submit proof of enrollment, a personal statement, an essay on the student’s “gold standard of love,” a statement of financial need, and at least one recommendation. The scholarship winner is selected each August, and the scholarship is awarded in September.
The firm is now accepting applications for the 2021 scholarship award.
