On October 15, 2020, legendary live Hip Hop band, Five Fingers of Funk, released their first single in twenty two years. “Who's Gonna Take the Weight” can be found on the band's Bandcamp and SoundCloud sites and will be available on all streaming platforms within the next week.
This is the first time that the original line up has recorded together since 1998. “Who's Gonna Take the Weight” includes politically charged lyrics by front man Pete Miser alongside the turntable virtuosity of D.J. Chillest Illest. Bass-heavy rhythms drive the song and brassy horn arrangements energize the conscious call to arms.
Inspired by the social justice movement of 2020 and the death of progressive icons Ruth Bader Ginsburg and John Lewis, Five Fingers wrote “Who's Gonna Take the Weight” to push for change with hopes of motivating voters to the polls on November 3rd.
“This song is our contribution to the soundtrack of regime change,” said Pete Miser, Frontman for the Five Fingers of Funk. “Who's Gonna Take The Weight pairs well with democracy, conscience resistance, and get out the vote activities.”
Five Fingers of Funk was founded in 1992 and became a vital part of the Portland music scene over the next nine years. The Fingers were known for playing sold-out, energetic, rafter-shaking party music in legendary PDX venues such as Berbati's, the X-Ray Cafe, Satyricon, La Luna and The Roseland Theater. The ten-piece Hip-Hop ensemble previously released three albums: “Slap Me 5 (1995)”, “About Time (1998)” and “Twisted & Lifted (2001)”.
