BERLIN - Aug. 30, 2022 - PRLog -- With gas prices on the rise and a global effort to move towards full electric vehicle (EV) adoption, there's one energy resource that investors are very interested in this year. A key element powering the world's switch to renewable energy is lithium. While gas-powered cars get their energy from burning fuel, electric vehicles run on big battery packs. Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries are rechargeable and used in EV's and many other portable electric devices – including mobile phones. They are smaller than batteries made from lead or nickel, saving space in the vehicle's design, and offer a safer alternative.
Collecting lithium in the quantities needed to power the world's EV's, mobile phones, and other electronics from mines and other reservoirs is historically hard to access and causes extensive damage to the environment. New ways to extract lithium, including from geothermal waters, are being identified to push the green energy alternative forward. In the U.K., Germany, and the U.S., lithium collection with a lower carbon footprint is already happening.
Lithium extractors aren't the only ones cashing in on the latest sustainable EV power development. Researchers continue to work to improve the safety and sustainability of lithium batteries, with new developments helping reduce the carbon output of these energy storage solutions. As the cost for EV batteries goes down, and the environmental impact of creating them decreases, more vehicle manufacturers and savvy consumers are joining the EV revolution. Today, it still costs more for vehicle manufacturers to make an electric car than a gas powered one, but as battery prices continue to go down, that may be reversed by 2025.
According to the Wellington Asset Management in South Korea, while the global vehicle market slumped during COVID, the sale of electric vehicles continued to rise dramatically. In Europe, EV sales were up 60% and in China a remarkable 80%.
"For investors looking to support the green transportation economy, an investment in both early-stage lithium companies and technology companies looking to improve safety and reduce carbon outputs from its collection, is key for a portfolio that has longevity" said David Lewis, Head of Venture Capital at Wellington Asset Management, Korea.
