Ave Maria Mutual Funds Responds to New York Times’ Criticism

Ave Maria Mutual Funds, a family of mutual funds created for serious investors who are pro-life and pro-family has been running advertisements on The Laura Ingraham Radio program for the past 8 weeks and garnered much attention because of the ads. “We have seen a significant increase in number of calls to our toll free number 1-866-AVE-MARIA as a direct result of these ads,” said Robert Schwartz, Vice President and Director of Marketing for Schwartz Investment Counsel, Inc., the firm that manages all five Ave Maria Mutual Funds. “Laura Ingraham is a strong and powerful voice on so many issues – her pro-life views and Catholicity are what attracted us to become an advertiser,” said Robert Schwartz.

The New York Times Editorial Board also wrote about these radio ads in a December 18, 2008 posting on their blog that was critical of the Ave Maria Mutual Funds for its “unmistakably conservative Catholic outlook.” This New York Times editorial prompted responses from The Catholic League, one of the nation’s largest Catholic civil rights organizations, defending Ave Maria Mutual Funds and George P. Schwartz, CFA, President of the Funds. Schwartz said, “Ave Maria Mutual Funds are not for everyone. They are specifically designed for orthodox Catholics who really care about the moral aspects of their investments. It does not surprise me that the New York Times is critical of our Funds and the philosophy behind them. The Times has a long record of bias. We are proudly pro-life and that is a politically incorrect view according to the liberal elite media such as the Times. The Funds are designed for investors that like the fact that we screen out companies that support abortion and pornography.”

Ave Maria Mutual Funds consists of four equity funds and a bond fund:

Ave Maria Catholic Values Fund (AVEMX)
Ave Maria Growth Fund (AVEGX)
Ave Maria Rising Dividend Fund (AVEDX)
Ave Maria Opportunity Fund (AVESX)
Ave Maria Bond Fund (AVEFX)
