Global Coalition to Shine Light on Life-Altering Disease Affecting Lives Worldwide

By: PRLog

CALGARY, Alberta - Oct. 3, 2024 - PRLog -- A global coalition of advocacy groups is uniting to put a spotlight on PANS PANDAS, a debilitating illness that affects individuals following common infections. The #LightUp4PANS initiative will illuminate more than 130 landmarks and buildings in towns and cities worldwide on October 9, World PANS PANDAS Awareness Day.

Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANS) and Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections (PANDAS) are serious, life-altering conditions affecting thousands globally. These disorders cause sudden, severe changes in behavior, mood, and neurological function, often triggered by infections such as strep throat or the flu.

Despite its prevalence, many families struggle to obtain the correct diagnosis and treatment due to a widespread lack of awareness among healthcare professionals.

The Canada-based charity Inflamed Brain Alliance is spearheading #LightUp4PANS to raise awareness, symbolizing hope and the battle against brain inflammation by lighting up landmarks and buildings in red (for inflammation) or green (for hope). The campaign brings together 14 non-profit organizations and advocacy groups from Canada, Italy, the UK, the US, Peru, and Poland. (See a full list of illuminated structures here.)

"This partnership is a key milestone in raising global awareness for PANS and PANDAS," says #LightUp4PANS Co-Founder Marnie Deschenes. "By collaborating internationally, we're building a broader, more powerful movement that ensures no one is left without proper care."

In addition to lighting landmarks, the initiative includes educational campaigns, public outreach, and fundraising efforts to support research and treatment for PANS PANDAS. Funds raised through awareness walks will aid research, advocacy programs, and provide resources for affected families.

The #LightUp4PANS campaign invites individuals, families, and businesses to attend light-up events, illuminate their homes or offices in red or green, and share educational materials. Social media users are encouraged to post photos and messages using the hashtag #LightUp4PANS.
