Obiect Culture is thrilled to present Living Landscapes: The Art of Perception, a solo exhibition by abstract artist Tom Hausken. Known for his unique approach to capturing the energy and essence of nature, Hausken's works transcend the literal to explore deeper connections between place, memory, and material.
Hausken's process begins outdoors, often inspired by hikes across the Pacific Northwest and Southern Oregon, where he absorbs the shapes, colors, and moods of nature. Instead of recreating exact images, he allows memory and perception to guide his hand, producing artworks that convey an evocative energy rather than literal landscapes. With up to thirty layers of pigment and texture, Hausken's paintings are meditations on time and change, embracing imperfections and chance as integral parts of the process.
Viewers will find themselves drawn to Hausken's use of material and texture - oils, industrial coatings, inks, natural materials, and shellac - each layer bringing new depth and subtly emerging colors that create a sense of hidden stories. The works hold quiet power in the areas where contrasting fields of color meet, inviting contemplation of what lies beneath and beyond.
This exhibition invites you to explore landscapes as they exist through the artist's lens, stepping into moments of abstraction that echo the fluid beauty of the natural world. Join us on November 22 during the Perez Art Walk for the opening reception, where you can meet the artist and experience a body of work celebrating the art of perception and the ever-shifting essence of memory.
ABOUT TOM HAUSKEN
Tom Hausken's background includes a degree from Seattle Pacific University and post-baccalaureate studies at the University of Washington. His art is shaped by his connection to nature and the places he calls home in eastern Washington and southern Oregon. Hausken's work is informed by his time at residencies such as the Vermont Studio Center, where he received a Pollock-Krasner Fellowship in 2016, and a residency at the Yakima Valley Museum. Hausken's unique approach to layering is a defining characteristic of his work. Each painting develops slowly, as he scrapes, cuts, and reworks the surface. This iterative process creates a dynamic relationship between the layers, suggesting the passage of time and inviting viewers to look closer and feel the "energy" emanating from his abstracted landscapes.
