“Being a leader in the guided tour industry while traveling safely and respectfully have always been our top goals,” says Valley Isle Excursions’ Nichole Hutaff-Nakamura, president. “As a local business that’s been operating for over two decades, we enjoy sharing this special place with people, partnering with like-minded businesses, and giving customers the best island experience.”
It could even be said that guided tours are in Hutaff-Nakamura’s blood. Her parents, a veteran tour guide mother and master mechanic father, acquired Valley Isle Excursions in 2002, just five years after it was founded.
Today, Hutaff-Nakamura runs the show. She remains committed to the company’s guided tours of Maui’s two most spectacular sites: the Road to Hana Tour and the majestic Haleakala Sunrise Tour. “Being able to witness that sunrise—the beauty, the energy, and the historic and culturally significant information our guides share—is an extraordinary experience that’s difficult to put into words,” says Hutaff-Nakamura.
Community for All
The company’s core values run deep, with a commitment to community topping off the list. “We have a long-standing history of supporting our community that no other business can come close to in terms of advocating and leadership,” says Hutaff-Nakamura. “As a tour operator, we want to be a resource to support our community and avoid using resources our community may need.”
That support is achieved in ways large and small, from pausing tour operations on Saturdays and Mondays, locals’ busiest days for commuting, to helping displaced families get their children to school using tour buses after the 2023 wildfires.
“We want to be prideful and share our unique culture and environment, but not at the expense of destroying it,” she says. “There is a way to have balance and keep the Aloha experience thriving.”
Valley Isle Excursions has a strong commitment to customer service, which is well reflected in its vans. “We’re one of the few companies with our own in-house mechanic,” says Hutaff-Nakamura. Every vehicle in Valley Isle Excursions’’ custom-built fleet includes individual captain’s chairs, safety harnesses, and front and rear air conditioning. “We also have elevated seats and extra-large viewing windows,” she says, “so you’re going to see everything.”
Valley Isle Excursions staff are dedicated to sustainability, too, by recycling what they can and making sure garbage from their tours is properly discarded. “We are one of the first companies on Maui to achieve the Sustainable Tour Operator certification,” she says.
Valley Isle Excursions’ guides are the stuff of Maui legend, known for being among the best trained and most knowledgeable. “We knock it out of the park,” says Hutaff-Nakamura. Guides are committed to sharing accurate, meaningful, and relevant information. They’re also trained in CPR and first-aid. “We want you to feel like you’re on tour with family, not just on a bus with strangers. When you go on vacation, we know you want to relax; you don’t want to build your own itinerary. We curate stops and take the research and brainwork out of it so you can just enjoy.”
