Park a 2013 Volvo XC90 next to its 2012-model-year kin and the differences may not jump out at you. Volvo didn’t see the need to fix something that wasn’t broken, so the Swedish automaker shied away from a full makeover for the 2013 model year, instead massaging and updating the SUV’s features to create a fresh yet familiar look.

Available now at Volvo dealerships, the 2013 XC90 is a more cohesive package, with body-color paint adorning areas that were formerly black plastic, including the lower bumpers, rocker panels and fender flares. The addition of LED daytime running headlights and taillights bring another sophisticated touch, while non-R-Design models also benefit from silver and chrome exterior trim pieces.

“Understated sophistication has always been a trait of Volvo vehicles, especially the XC90, and the latest model communicates that better than ever,” said Dan Leahy, general manager of Massachusetts Volvo dealership Boston Volvo Village. “The 2013 updates modernize the XC90’s exterior without weakening its classic look, and the new interior tweaks add even more luxury to the mix, a fact that Boston drivers should find particularly appealing.”

Inside, the standard XC90 3.2 gains sanded silver aluminum trim, as well as white instrumentation lighting and even a leather strap to help close the tailgate. The two higher XC90 3.2 trim levels, Premier Plus and Platinum, get Sovereign hide leather upholstery on the seating surfaces, as well as red wood inlays, a matching shift knob and an optional red wood steering wheel. The Platinum trim also features a 12-speaker 650-watt stereo system, and all XC90 models come with Bluetooth phone connectivity and audio streaming.

Buyers of the 2013 Volvo XC90 will find the same familiar 3.2-liter inline six-cylinder engine under the hood. Producing 240 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque, the refined engine is connected to a six-speed automatic transmission and returns 23 mpg on the highway in both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive guises.

While the 2013 Volvo XC90’s updates are subtle, Automotive News recently reported that there are big changes coming down the pipeline. Volvo told the auto publication that the XC90 will receive a complete overhaul in 2014, taking advantage of a new platform that is around 320 pounds lighter to improve fuel economy. Using turbocharging and, in some cases, plug-in hybrid technology, Volvo is also developing a new family of four-cylinder engines that will surpass the power of larger displacement engines like the six-cylinder currently found in the XC90.

“Volvo is pushing ahead with new technologies that will create lighter vehicles without sacrificing the brand’s world-renowned safety,” Leahy noted. “We can expect to see major changes in the Volvo lineup in the coming years, whether they are styling upgrades, new powertrains or additional advances when it comes to safety technology.”
