Rose Institute Releases 2014 Video Voter Series on California Propositions

This week, the Rose Institute of State and Local Government at Claremont McKenna College released its Video Voter Series for the six statewide propositions that California voters will be considering on Election Day, November 4th. The brief videos describe each measure, indicate how much it will cost, list the supporters and opponents, and summarize in clear language the consequence of a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ vote. The propositions involve a range of issues including a state water bond, state budget policy, health insurance, medical malpractice, criminal punishment, and tribal gaming.

The video series was created by a team of six student researchers led by election expert Bob Stern. Videos for Prop. 1, Prop. 2, Prop. 45, Prop. 46, Prop. 47, and Prop. 48 are separately searchable online. They are also posted, with more detailed information, at www.roseinstitute.org.

Rose Institute Associate Director Ken Miller said, “Ballot measures present important policy questions, but they are often confusing and the campaigns can be manipulative. Voters need an impartial analysis of each measure, and a video explanation is the easiest way to get it. If voters see these videos, they will be much better informed and their votes will better reflect their actual views about each proposition.”

The Rose Institute, founded in 1973, is a premier undergraduate research institution located on the campus of Claremont McKenna College in Southern California. A respected resource for information on California state and local government, the Rose Institute maintains extensive demographic, economic, and political databases. Under the direction of senior faculty and staff, students from Claremont McKenna College play a significant role in researching, interpreting, and presenting data. The Rose Institute launched the Video Voter Series in 2012. For more information on the Rose Institute and the Video Voter Series, see www.roseinstitute.org.
