On Nov 24th, Everplay Interactive launched a Kickstarter campaign for their newest video game, “Unsettled,” a survival sandbox game that challenges players to combat a hostile open-world by battling hunger, thirst, beasts, and each other. Described as having “top-down gameplay,” reminiscent of Hotline: Miami and the original Grand Theft Autos, this game aims to give users a unique experience each time they play.
Everplay and CookieBit, the creators of Unsettled, don’t want to just create another entertaining sandbox game with Unsettled. They see it as a huge social experiment. Kris Jones, the designer behind Unsettled says “We are very excited to see how the players interact with each other using all of the toys and features we give them. Players have a lot of freedom over their choices and actions.” “Many games with this system, such as DayZ and Rust, generally result in kill on sight situations and a lot of bandits. But if you watch YouTube or Twitch, you’ll see it is the creative choices like playing a funny role or creating humorous situations that become fan favorites and popular to viewers. Our plan is to put a focus on these.”
Players will be placed in an immersive game environment where they can explore abandon towns, underground bunkers, and laboratories full of loot. In addition, they can collect resources to craft tools, weapons, medical supplies, and more. At the same time, each player must be on a constant search for food, water, and shelter in order to remain in peak condition and avoid unwanted enemies. Finally, gamers can maximize their chance of survival by building a home base or creating “buddy bots,” which can aid in defense against beasts or other competing players.
“Survival is the core of the experience. As one of the last remaining humans on your desolated planet, the odds are not in your favor,” says Jones. “However, you can also pursue other story lines like becoming a renowned hunter capable of taking down the mightiest beasts or leading a group of bandits as the bane of other survivors.”
Rather than going to a traditional game publisher, the team, who have collectively released 30+ games, decided to remain independent and use the Kickstarter crowdfunding platform to help finance the production of “Unsettled.” The Kickstarter project offers a variety of rewards or perks that backers can claim in exchange for pledging to the campaign. These include the ability to receive a beta copy of the game, exclusive wallpapers, access to the original soundtrack, the chance to be a character in the game or design a vehicle/weapon, and more.
