Mike Tornabe Talks About The Future of New York Public Transportation

The future of public transportation looks faster, quieter, convenient and personalized says Michael Tornabe.

NEW YORK, NY, July 28, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Even though the automobile with its combustion engine has many drawbacks, car sales continue to be on the rise. The issues surrounding automobiles include pollution, which contributes to climate change, sprawl and traffic problems. A car also has its advantages including modularity, personalization and power. Efficient public transport systems could be the key to reducing the number of cars on our roads, but then, even in places where the public transport system is very good people still want to own cars.

"The main problem with public transportation is that it is inconvenient and slow", says Michael Tornabe, the man at the helm of the Logan Bus Company. In most cases, transit stations are not close to businesses or homes, making them very inconvenient for those who have to walk long distances to catch the train or the bus. In addition, transit routes are quite limited when it comes to both time and geography.

"The solution is to have a public transport system that matches the advantages enjoyed when using a car as well as those of public transport," he adds. This will mean that the stations will need to be a short walking distance away, and the public transport should have lower emissions. Public transport should also be able to get you where you need to be when you need to be there with the least possible amount of waiting and walking.

Several public transport systems may be able to get us there. The Personal Rapid Transit seems to be going in the right direction. It has lightweight pods that carry a few people at a time and can take people to their direct destination since they do not have prescribed routes. Additionally, they do not have to make any stops while in transit.

SkyTran also offers passenger pods that carry two people at a time. They use maglev technology and are therefore levitating over the rail. These are very comfortable since there is neither friction nor contact. They require fewer replacements and repairs because the wear is very limited. The electricity needed to move them is very little and solar panels could do the job. With speeds of over 100 miles per hour, they may just be what is needed in urban areas.
