On Friday, February 22, at 2:00pm, Lincoln Park Coast Cultural District (LPCCD) www.lpccd.org and partners will announce the creation of the Green Collar Apprenticeship Program (GreenCAP), Newark, NJ’s flagship green collar job training program. “LPCCD’s GreenCAP program is positioned to be a national best practice and provides an economic incentive for low-income people to join the green movement,” comments Mayor Cory A. GreenCAP provides the clean energy economy with a well-trained, world-class green workforce. In turn, the green economy will provide Newark’s working class higher wages, access to benefits and more career choices in a growing industry.
The program is administered in collaboration with CentrALL, Van Jones' national advocacy organization, Green For All, the City of Newark, NewarkWorks and Essex County Vocational High School.
- GreenCAP will sponsor 100 trade licenses for Newark residents in plumbing, electrical and HVAC systems.
- GreenCAP will target Newark residents, veterans, ex-felons and at-risk young people.
- The program provides training on LPCCD’s construction projects containing United States Green Council Building (USGBC) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Certified buildings.
- GreenCAP graduates also receive a green certificate to verify their classroom instruction and on-the-job training on green construction projects.

As part of the Clinton Global Initiative, www.clintonglobalinitiative.org, on Friday, February 22 from 8am – 1pm, the country’s leading green collar jobs advocates, Newark’s policy makers, National grantmakers, corporate partners and green developers will converge at PSEG to plan Newark’s Green Future Summit, occurring in Spring 2008.
Both LPCCD and the City of Newark are committed partners in the Clinton Global Initiative in conjunction with Green for All, The Apollo Alliance, GreenOrder and other groups. The Newark Green Future Summit will develop a roadmap for sustainable development in the City of Newark.

LPCCD is transforming a low-income neighborhood in Newark, New Jersey into an arts and cultural district. The creation of local skilled green collar workers is essential to LPCCD's revitalization mission as a green community development corporation. The arts and cultural district will include the building of 300 "green" mixed-income housing units, music festivals, historic restoration projects and the Museum of African American Music, a Smithsonian Institute affiliate. There will be over one million square feet of development, including eleven United States Green Building Council (USGBC) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Certified buildings and LPCCD participates in the USGBC LEED-Neighborhood Development program.
