Wintegra Announces Expansion of Its Range of Cellular Software and Silicon to Include LTE Capability

Wintegra® Inc., a fabless semiconductor and software company targeting the access infrastructure market, announced today that it has broadened the range of its cellular base station (BTS) platforms by adding the full set of LTE (long term evolution) protocols to its existing offerings for 2G, 3G, HSPA+ and WiMAX 802.16e.

This production quality LTE software, designed to run on the family of WinPath processors, will extend the range of existing backhaul transport capability to include all the protocols and security required for LTE BTS designs.

Wintegra will also offer a complete software based solution for LTE radio access functionality. This software, being developed by Wintegra together with partners mimoOn and picoChip, will offer RLC (Radio Link Control) and MAC (Media Access Control) capability running on WinPath and the PHY functions running on the picoChip PicoArray devices.

Wintegra software already meets the majority of the LTE backhaul requirements (including for example UDP/IP, GTP, classification, ciphering and authentication) but Wintegra now intends to provide complete support for all backhaul and security processing for the new LTE BTS requirements. The additional support will include features like S1/X2 lossless handover, PDCP and RoHC required for LTE. Wintegra already provides extensive support for BTS platforms and network topologies including 2G, W-CDMA, HSPA+ and WiMAX. This full LTE software suite gives customers the ultimate flexibility to use one silicon and software architecture for their entire range of platform needs. This opens the possibility for significant savings in engineering resources, compared to utilizing unique platform designs for each different BTS family.

Wintegra has several of the major cellular BTS manufacturers utilizing their architecture today for 3G and/or WiMAX BTS designs. Many are now using or planning to use these platforms as the basis of their LTE designs. Wintegra is working with these manufacturers and their operator customers in the early stage deployment of LTE, providing them with the high throughput requirements for a multi sector platform and eventually with full rate LTE support.

The Wintegra LTE RLC & MAC is a full featured and fully programmable lower and upper MAC implementation that supports the LTE standard. Key features include: multi sector OFDMA support for FDD and TDD modes; Point-to-Multipoint topology; multi-zone support; support for at least 512 subscribers per sector; numerous queues per connection; and enhanced statistics support. The MAC is highly modular and flexible, allowing rapid adaptation to standards changes as well as integration of proprietary customer modules and features. The code is fully integrated with Wintegra production quality wireless data path software packages. All of this MAC software can run on the WinHDP2 development platform.

Wintegra is demonstrating a fully integrated LTE Base Station Transport, RLC and MAC implementation with two partners, picoChip and mimoOn at the LTE World Summit 2008 in Berlin (May 21-23). This features the WinHDP2 running the Wintegra LTE software. The WinHDP2 has been used by many manufacturers as a reference platform for their WiMAX 802.16e BTS development, but at this show are configured with the Wintegra LTE software suite in conjunction with mimoOn (backhaul, RLC and MAC) running on the WinPath and PHY technology from picoChip.

We expect different companies to address these challenges in different ways, said Colin Alexander, Director of Wireless marketing at Wintegra. With multiple processors each with different performance ranges, we will provide the ability to handle both centralized and decentralized cases with our low power, multi-core architecture thus allowing designers greater flexibility to choose how to partition different transport, security, control, RLC and MAC processing tasks between the different BTS modules.
