SAS Announces American Statistical Association Fellows

Two SAS R&D directors have joined a group of international statisticians as Fellows of the American Statistical Association (ASA). Bradley Jones and Maura Stokes join five other SAS employees who have received this distinction.

ASA, the nations preeminent professional statistical society, recently selected 53 of its members as Fellows of the Association. The recipients were honored for their professional contributions and leadership in the field of statistical science.

Bradley Jones, R&D Director of JMP, a business unit of SAS, developed the concepts behind two major JMP® capabilities the Custom Designer and Prediction Profiler. Jones also developed, documented and maintained the MATLAB Statistics Toolbox while working at The MathWorks Inc., a leading global provider of software for technical computing and model-based design. Jones joined SAS in 1997.

R&D Director Maura Stokes, a 23-year SAS veteran, works with SAS® statistical software, including evaluation of additional methodologies, application development, documentation, project management, user testing, R&D presentations and tutorials, and professional outreach. She is also lead author of the book Categorical Data Analysis Using the SAS System.

The collective outstanding contributions of this years Fellows from academia, government and industry have invigorated the statistics discipline in education, research, administration and service, said Peter A. Lachenbruch, ASA president. Each year, the designation as ASA Fellow brings members from many specialties to the fore. It makes us all proud to recognize their accomplishments.

In previous years, five other SAS employees have been named ASA Fellows:

  • Jim Goodnight, SAS CEO and co-founder (1981)
  • John Sall, SAS Executive Vice President and co-founder (1998)
  • Bob Rodriguez, Director, Research & Development (2004)
  • Oliver Schabenberger, Research Statistician Developer (2006)
  • Russ Wolfinger, Director of Scientific Discovery and Genomics (2007)

All seven SAS Fellows work at SAS world headquarters in Cary, NC. Sall, Wolfinger and Jones are part of the JMP division.

The Committee on Fellows gives due weight to publications, positions held by the candidates in the organizations in which they are employed, membership and attainments in other societies, activities within the association and other professional activities. According to the association bylaws, each year the Committee on Fellows can elect no more than one-third of 1 percent of the total ASA membership as Fellows. The Fellows will be presented at the 168th annual Joint Statistical Meetings on Tuesday, Aug. 5 in Denver.
