Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute Selects Eclipsys As Comprehensive IT Partner

Eclipsys Corporation® (NASDAQ: ECLP), The Outcomes Company®, today announced that the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit, Mich., has signed a comprehensive agreement to deploy the companys Sunrise Enterprise integrated suite of clinical and revenue cycle solutions. The broad-scale program, which includes extensive use of Eclipsys information technology (IT) outsourcing services, will create an integrated technology platform to support patient safety and care outcomes through automation and enhanced information access.

Comprehensive IT Partner for Care Improvement Goals and Clinical Research Initiatives

According to John C. Ruckdeschel, M.D., president and chief executive officer of the Karmanos Cancer Institute, key to the selection process was that Eclipsys computerized physician order entry (CPOE) system was identified as a solution capable of successfully managing the complex requirements for order entry and clinical documentation in an oncology environment.

Our patients expect the most advanced care, which is supported by quick, online access to the latest patient information and evidence-based clinical knowledge, Dr. Ruckdeschel explained. It is important to adopt enabling technologies that are proven to support the complexities involved in cancer care and research. Our partnership with Eclipsys is another facet of providing world-class care to our patients.

Clinical Integration across Departments and Care Settings

Karmanos plans to implement Sunrise Clinical Manager and its integrated modules, including Sunrise Acute Care, Sunrise Pharmacy , and Knowledge-Based Medication Administration to provide a closed-loop medication process and to streamline the information workflows and care coordination among physicians, pharmacists and nurses. In combination, the new technologies will help to reduce the risk of communications delays, safeguard medication dispensing and optimize the time of physicians, nurses and pharmacists alike.

Karmanos also will implement Eclipsys radiology information system and Sunrise Record Manager, which will facilitate comprehensive chart tracking and requests, chart completion, release of information, electronic signature and medical record abstracting. In combination with the other selected Eclipsys solutions, Karmanos has set the stage to create a complete electronic medical record for its patients.

In addition to automating its acute care environments, Karmanos selected Sunrise Ambulatory Care to automate care delivery in its outpatient treatment centers, enabling a single integrated patient health record that will give clinicians access to the patients history of treatment and conditions to assist in making timely and accurate care decisions, regardless of the care setting.

Streamlined Registration and Improved Resource Utilization

In terms of financial workflow enhancement, Karmanos will deploy Eclipsys comprehensive revenue cycle management solution that covers the entire revenue cycle from scheduling, to registration, to follow-up billing processes with Sunrise Access Manager and Sunrise Patient Financials. The advanced solutions are designed to help improve cash flow, reduce claim denials and underpayments, generate first-time clean claims and enhance regulatory compliance, including pay for performance initiatives.

IT Outsourcing to Maximize Investment and Efficiencies

Karmanos also is using the Eclipsys IT outsourcing services. As part of the agreement, Eclipsys will provide additional expert staff to manage the IT infrastructure across its facilities, especially as Karmanos undergoes the multiple system implementation. As part of the IT outsourcing agreement, Karmanos IT employees will become employees of Eclipsys. Outsourcing services will encompass managing applications support, network management and help desk activities, as well as server and desktop computing. Eclipsys solutions will be remotely hosted by the ISO 9001:2000-certified Eclipsys Technology Solutions Center in Mountain Lakes, N.J.

Eclipsys is consistently ranked as one of the world's top outsourcing service providers on The Global Outsourcing 100, which is issued by the International Association of Outsourcing Professionals (IAOP). In 2008, Eclipsys was only one of two healthcare information technology (HIT) companies to be included on the list.

We are proud Karmanos selected Eclipsys as a strategic partner to maximize patient safety, care quality and revenue cycle improvement outcome goals, said R. Andrew Eckert, Eclipsys president and chief executive officer. This agreement, which is one of the largest in our companys history, is testament to the expertise Eclipsys can bring to a project of this scope, and it demonstrates the continued market recognition of the power of our solutions and the quality of our modern XA architecture. We look forward to working with the Karmanos team.
