AnMed Health System Continues Drive to Push Out Paper, Improve Financial Performance

Building on its previous success with an electronic document imaging solution, AnMed Health System has selected McKessons Horizon Enterprise Content Manager solution to further automate previously paper-based processes. This powerful, easy-to-use tool provides a single, secure location for storage and access to various content types including documents, files, electronic reports, and rich media like audio, video and computer-based training programs which were previously stored in disparate locations. Horizon Enterprise Content Manager can be used in business departments across the enterprise, including human resources, accounts payable, materials management, legal, medical affairs and education.

AnMed Health turned to McKesson for enterprise content management after a successful implementation of McKessons Horizon Patient Folder document management solution. With the Horizon Patient Folder solution, AnMed Health was able to eliminate paper in the medical records storage process, decrease chart signing deficiency rates, and streamline the revenue cycle. The Anderson, S.C., organization decided to further extend its paperless processes into the laboratory and human resources departments with Horizon Enterprise Content Manager. Bill Manson, chief operating officer for AnMed Health, expects that the new tool will help their laboratory maintain its ISO 9000 (International Organization for Standardization) registration by providing a rigorous document control standard for the laboratory outreach program.

Our commitment to quality has always been a key strategy for AnMed Health, and we are very proud of our ISO 9000 laboratory registration, Manson explained. Our lab department needed a solution to electronically store requisitions for its outreach program. We chose Horizon Enterprise Content Manager to automate this process and reduce operational and supply costs. It should be a perfect solution to meet our needs to streamline the paper processes and help us improve our ISO quality system.

In addition to automating laboratory processes, AnMed expects its human resources department to benefit significantly with the installation. As the largest employer in Anderson County, S.C., AnMeds human resources department is faced with managing thousands of documents from new applicants and existing employees. Managing paper processes for day-to-day transactions for multiple acute care facilities and offices is complex when you are faced with pushing paper, said Manson. We knew there had to be a better way, and McKesson is helping us get there.

Previously the department managed employee change of status forms, documents, badge photos and associated electronic files from a locked file room, employee file cabinets, employee computers, and share drives. Searching for an employees information often meant searching in multiple areas. With Horizon Enterprise Content Manager, we can dramatically streamline processes by putting all of that information online and giving authorized staff immediate and secure access to employee information, Manson continued. This will also enable the department to lower its supply costs and make better use of the space currently consumed by paper files.

The first solution of its kind designed specifically for healthcare, Horizon Enterprise Content Manager delivers state-of-the-art content capture, simple deployment, and ease of administration. It also provides a scaleable enterprise approach that streamlines processes and drives down operational costs for any department of the healthcare organization.

In addition, this solution integrates to a variety of McKesson and non-McKesson applications to deliver immediate, online access to enterprise documents and content. For example, Horizon Enterprise Content Manager can connect with accounts payable software, converting paper-based invoices into industry-standard electronic transactions. By providing immediate access to business-critical information, it enables faster, more accurate decisions without requiring users log in to other applications or computers. The resulting increase in productivity helps drive lower operational costs, increased ability to take advantage of fast-pay vendor discounts, and overall revenue improvements from all departments.

This is a tool that addresses the growing challenge organizations like AnMed Health face in centrally managing and creating immediate, secure access to mission-critical content, said Bill Kloes, vice president and general manager, Enterprise Imaging Group, McKesson Provider Technologies. As a full enterprise solution, its capabilities drive value in all departments in which high volumes of unstructured content are required by their business processes or systems.
