Intelsat Empowers Mobile, On-demand Video: Delivers 2008 European Soccer Championship and Olympics to Millions

Intelsat, Ltd., the worlds leading provider of commercial satellite services, announced that its global satellite network provided a seamless platform for its customers to deliver this summers largest sporting events to millions of Internet users and mobile phone subscribers throughout the Americas and Europe.

Terra Networks Brasil SA, the leading Brazilian Internet company, used Intelsat capacity on the Intelsat 3R satellite located at 315º East and teleports in Europe, including Intelsats facility in Fuchsstadt, Germany, to distribute 12 channels of Olympic programming throughout Brazil. Once the content was downlinked at Terra Brasils facility, the service provider then streamed that programming on the Internet via its interactive Web portal and provided mobile users the capability to view Olympic events on their handheld devices.

Because we delivered 12 unedited, live transmission channels from Beijing to Internet and mobile phone users throughout Latin America, we needed a robust, error-free transmission network that would ensure us being able to meet our increased viewer demand for the Olympics, said Frederic Morisot, Telecommunication Director for Terra Brasil.

Under a separate contract, MEDIA BROADCAST, owner of the Austrian frequencies for DVB-H and operator of the national mobile-TV platform, used Intelsat capacity on the Intelsat 905 satellite located at 335.5º East to launch its mobile-TV service in Austria. The rollout began in June, with MEDIA BROADCASTs transmission of 15 television and 5 radio programs, in time to give its mobile phone customers access to the European soccer championships.

Terra Brasil and MEDIA BROADCAST are representative of a growing number of our customers that use Intelsats satellite infrastructure to make cutting-edge technology and applications available to end users, said Mike DeMarco, Intelsats Vice President, Video Services.

Intelsat will be exhibiting in Hall 1, Stand C71 at IBC 2008, the international tradeshow for professionals involved in the creation, management and delivery of content for the broadcasting industry, which is being held at the RAI Centre in Amsterdam on 12-16 September.
