Gov. Richardson Signs Pickens Pledge Joining More Than 300,000 Americans Who Want to End Our Addiction to Foreign Oil

New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson became the first Governor to sign the pledge to join T. Boone Pickens campaign to break Americas addiction to foreign oil.

Governor Richardson is a former Secretary of Energy, Pickens said. He knows how dangerous the current situation is from a national security standpoint. And as a sitting Governor he also knows the economic risks of spending $700 billion a year importing foreign oil.

Bill Richardson is a man of vision and a man of action. I salute him for his leadership in urging the next Administration in Washington whoever wins in November to make reducing our dependence on foreign oil an absolute priority during the first 100 days of his Presidency, Pickens said.

Pickens was in Albuquerque for a town hall meeting last week at which nearly 2,000 people listened to Pickens explain his plan to reduce Americas dependence on foreign oil by 30% over the next ten years.

While Governor Richardson said there are elements of the Pickens plan he is concerned about, he supports T. Boone Pickens in calling on the next President to develop immediately a comprehensive energy plan that reduces U.S. oil dependence and promotes renewable energy on a massive scale.

The Pickens Pledge reads:

We will no longer stand by and watch as America's national security and economy become more dependent on the unstable foreign nations that we rely on for nearly 70% of the oil we use each day.

We spend nearly $700 billion every year buying foreign oil, which represents the greatest transfer of wealth in the history of mankind.

The new President and the 111th Congress need to enact an energy plan that reduces our foreign oil dependence by at least 30% within ten years.

This plan must include proven American technology and resources; the development of new energy sources; and the expansion and modernization of the national electrical grid to transport renewable energy to homes and businesses.

Delaying any further means tacit support for continuing America's addiction to foreign oil.

I join with T. Boone Pickens and his army of supporters in calling for an Energy Independence Plan to be enacted within the first 100 days of the new administration.
