Amazon thinks that volatile price swings in the boom-and-bust oil business are a perfect match for its web services cloud computing division, which generates the majority of the technology giant's profits. Instead of owning data centers, oil companies should outsource their data costs so the ups and downs in energy-sector profitability are not as severe.
