December 7, 2021 /3BL Media/ - National Grid, AARP New York and Public Utility Law Project (PULP) are collaborating to bring awareness to income eligible customers, particularly seniors, about National Grid’s Energy Affordability Program (EAP) to increase awareness of the relief program and other no-cost energy saving programs.
National Grid’s EAP program provides automatic bill discounts to customers enrolled annually in the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP). In addition to the EAP monthly bill credit, customers can also benefit from other no-cost energy saving programs to improve the comfort of their home.
National Grid, AARP New York and PULP were available at the EAC Network Senior Center in Hempstead to connect eligible customers to the assistance and energy saving programs.
National Grid Consumer Advocates provided information and assisted seniors with enrollment. In addition, as part of National Grid’s Project C community commitment initiative, company volunteers helped celebrate the holidays and donated some gifts and decorations.
“As colder weather approaches, ensuring our customers’ safety, especially seniors and our most vulnerable customers, is paramount to our work, we have programs available, and we are committed to increasing awareness so they can take advantage of the help available,” said Rudolph Wynter, President of National Grid New York. “We are working with AARP New York and PULP to reach as many eligible customers as possible and assist them with our EAP program, in addition, our Home Energy Assistance Team (HEAT) is available to help with no-cost energy saving upgrades. We have a renewed commitment to the community through our Project C initiative to support our customers and I appreciate our volunteers who are here today supporting the local community, providing holiday cheer.”
AARP New York advocates for seniors and is collaborating with National Grid to promote programs to Long Islanders. “Energy assistance programs can be a literal lifesaver for older New Yorkers who struggle to pay their bill as we enter the winter months,” said Beth Finkel, AARP New York State Director. “Sadly, less than half of eligible customers take advantage of this important help each year. Now is the time to sign up for HEAP and to access other assistance to pay your energy bill. We thank National Grid for its efforts to reach customers and enroll them in critical savings programs.”
PULP educates and advocates on behalf of New York’s vulnerable low-income utility consumers. “The home energy assistance program is a vital link in protecting vulnerable low and fixed-income households from dangerous cold,” said Richard Berkley, Executive Director of the Public Utility Law Project of New York. “We are pleased to collaborate with AARP, the counties and National Grid to help Long Islanders.”
EAC Network hosted the event at the Hempstead Senior Center with National Grid, AARP New York and PULP to bring awareness to seniors and enroll them in cost saving programs.

New York Senator Kevin Thomas participated to provide support to his constituents. "No New Yorker should have to choose between heating their home or putting food on the table,” said Senator Kevin Thomas. “National Grid’s Energy Assistance Program (EAP) has been instrumental in helping many Long Islanders, especially seniors living on fixed incomes, with the rising cost of home energy prices. I am grateful to National Grid and its community partners for raising awareness of this no-cost assistance program and I urge all eligible residents, seniors, and families to apply.”
Town of Hempstead Supervisor Don Clavin participated in encouraging seniors and all those who are income eligible to sign up for the available programs to receive benefits. “As a municipality that has provided millions of dollars in federal CARES funding and implemented dozens of programs to assist people who are struggling during these uncertain times, the Town of Hempstead is proud to stand with National Grid, AARP and the Public Utility Law Project to highlight another cost-saving initiative available to residents in need,” said Town of Hempstead Supervisor Don Clavin. “We encourage all neighbors, especially senior citizens, to inquire about this great service that can help lower your energy bill this winter and throughout the year."
Village of Hempstead Mayor Waylyn Hobbs participated in the event and thanks seniors for all they have done for the community and now it was time for them to receive a helping hand.
“I am thrilled to partner with AARP, EAC, and National Grid to bring energy assistance to our seniors and those who are most vulnerable in our community,” said Village of Hempstead Mayor Waylyn Hobbs. “It is absolutely important in the Village of Hempstead to have strong collaborations to ensure that no one is cold during this Winter Season.”
