Washington, DC - On May 7, 2025, Americans from across the nation will gather at the U.S. Capitol to raise their voices on behalf of the Karen people of Burma (Myanmar) — a deeply faithful and family-centered ethnic group that has endured over 75 years of military oppression.

Karen Day in Washington, DC is a peaceful and purposeful gathering organized by Karen Americans from around the USA and national advocates and grassroots organizations. This event aims to spotlight the ongoing religious persecution and genocide of the ethnic minorities in Burma while urging the United States to reaffirm its commitment to liberty and human rights around the world.

For decades, the Burmese military regime has burned churches, destroyed villages, and silenced voices of faith — targeting women and children in particular. Despite this, the Karen people and other ethnic minorities have continued to resist with courage and hope, grounded in their faith and belief in human dignity.

This year’s gathering will:

  • Call on the U.S. government to pressure China and Russia to stop supplying weapons to the Burmese military.

  • Celebrate the religious heritage and resilient spirit of the Karen people, many of whom were introduced to the Gospel by American missionaries and now serve in U.S. military and churches.

  • Urge the Thai government to stop supporting the Burmese regime and instead stand for freedom and human rights.

  • Promote the right to self-determination for the Karen and all ethnic groups through local governance rooted in family, faith, and traditional values.

  • Invite lawmakers to support religious liberty and cultural preservation — principles enshrined in America’s founding.

“As Americans, we have a duty to speak out when freedom is under attack — especially when the brutal Burma regime continues to kill innocent villagers," said Kevin LaChapelle, one of the event organizers and longtime advocate who has worked in conflict zones. “We invite everyone, including our elected officials, and families to stand with our amazing Karen ethnic people in this cause.”

Attendees are encouraged to wear traditional Karen shirts or red “Make Kawthoolei Great Again” t-shirts. This is not a political protest — it is a peaceful, prayerful event dedicated to freedom, faith, and the future of a people long forgotten by many, but never forgotten by God.
