In human eyes, the cornea usually refracts light precisely onto the back of the eye. However, there can be cases where the cornea is altered, which can cause issues such as nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia) or astigmatism, because the light is not redirected properly. While glasses or contact lenses can correct this problem, reshaping the cornea itself using LASIK is a more permanent solution. When someone undergoes LASIK surgery, a special type of laser is used to precisely change the shape of the dome-shaped clear tissue at the front of their eye (cornea) to improve vision.
