This month marked the annual meeting for the Society for the Advancement of Patient Blood Management (SABM) held at Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center in Nashville, Tennessee sponsored by Vanderbilt University Medical Center. The critically acclaimed book Blood Works: An Owner's Guide was featured in the opening presentation.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Oct. 17, 2023 - PRLog -- The conference saw more than 300 attendees made up of medical professionals and volunteers in Patient Blood Management welcomed by MaryAnn Sromoski, APRN and Sarah Walbolt, BSN of the Let's Talk PBM podcast for SABM's conference entitled, "PBM & Blood Health: It Tops the Charts!" and contained features on the podcast Let's Talk PBM, World Anemia Awareness and Blood Works: An Owner's Guide.

The World Anemia Awareness team presented statistics that documented the scale of its year one launch, with engagement of over 12 million interested in anemia and iron deficiency.  They announced February 13th 2024 as the official date for the next World Anemia Awareness Day.

Many of the 48 contributing authors to Blood Works were present at the conference, with lead author Dr Irwin Gross presenting a key lecture on why data and metrics are vital to a good patient blood management program. Dr Gross commented, "After not speaking at a live conference for over 4 years, it was fantastic to be back with everyone sharing knowledge on what is ultimately best for the patient and their blood health."

President of SABM, Dr Carolyn Burns explained: "There is a real explosion of take up on the awareness of blood health, anemia and iron deficiency and the turn out at the conference has been incredible. We're seeing global collaboration and sharing of information in order to do what is best for the patient and I'm so happy to have a part in that."

Presentations were made by contributing author to Blood Works, Angel Augusto Pérez-Calatayud, MD who had the first patient blood management program implemented in his hospital in Mexico in 2018 and the program has since made significant savings to the hospital and resulted in better outcomes for the patient.

The audience was thrilled to hear the exciting developments in nursing related to PBM.  Becky Rock, RN (Alberta Health Services) and Richard Verstraete, RN (Medstar Health) shared recent developments in the United States with potential for global reach in PBM nursing care.

In association with World Anemia Awareness, a special promotion for copies of Blood Works: An Owner's Guidewas available throughout the event. Paperbacks and eBooks are available from the official Blood Works: An Owner's Guide website and distributed globally by Simon & Schuster. Prize winners at the conference were pleased to receive signed copies of Blood Works by Dr Gross.
