Barnes & Noble, Inc. (NYSE: BKS), the leading retailer of content, digital media and educational products, today announced that Maggie Shipstead’s debut novel, Seating Arrangements (Alfred A. Knopf/Random House) is the latest selection in the Barnes & Noble Recommends program. The book is on sale today and can be purchased at any Barnes & Noble store, online at Barnes & Noble.com (www.bn.com/recommends) or instantly downloaded on Barnes & Noble’s NOOK® eReaders and Tablets.
Titles selected for the B&N Recommends program are the books our booksellers can’t stop talking about. Thought-provoking and uniquely engaging, B&N Recommends selections are chosen for sheer reading pleasure and their appeal as book club picks.
Here’s what some of our booksellers are saying about Seating Arrangements:
“Fans of The Royal Tenenbaums will appreciate and enjoy this
family drama rich
with humor, heartbreak, inappropriate relationships, social grandstanding,
misunderstandings, and quirky family members.”
--Rosey McArdell, bookseller, Eden Prairie, MN
“Maggie Shipstead paints her canvas with insight, wry wit and the
devilish ability to turn a
phrase. This gets my recommendation as this summer’s beach read.
It will also be great for book club selections.”
--Bob Baldwin, bookseller, Florence, KY
“Feigned ignorance, unspoken resentment, and repressed passion mixed
with a rubber band snap
style of satire at how the other half lives and marries and you have all the ingredients for a
delicious soap opera.”
--Maggie Wardlaw, bookseller, Los Angeles, CA
By turns poignant and laugh-out-loud funny, Seating Arrangements is reminiscent of last summer’s bestseller, Maine, by J. Courtney Sullivan and also That Old Cape Magic by Richard Russo. A wedding may provide the setting, but it’s Shipstead’s characters that tell the story, a story of appearances and obligations, assumptions and expectations, avoidance and denial, with snappy, sharp dialogue. Maggie Shipstead was born in 1983 and grew up in Orange County, California. Her short fiction has appeared in Tin House, VQR, Glimmer Train, and The Best American Short Stories. She is a graduate of the Iowa Writers Workshop and the recipient of a Stegner Fellowship from Stanford University.
Here is what the publishers are saying about their recent success with B&N Recommends:
“For Barnes & Noble to pick Jonah Lehrer’s Imagine: How Creativity Works as its first-ever non-fiction B&N Recommends title was an enormous vote of confidence that helped launch the book as a #1 bestseller,” says Bruce Nichols, Senior Vice President, Publisher, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Adult Trade. “As we approached the book’s launch date, reading many tea leaves, we had high hopes of success—but it was this tea leaf that spoke loudest of all, and meant a great deal to us.”
The Barnes & Noble Recommends program includes promotion in stores, on bn.com, and on NOOK products.
