NetProspex developed the report through an analysis of the social media activity of 2 million employees at thousands of U.S.-based businesses, and the newly released report ranks the top performers-breaking them down by company, industry, job title and geographic region. Following the successful debut of the NetProspex Social 50 report in May 2010, which ranked the top 50 social media-savvy companies, NetProspex developed several new categories to illustrate how widespread social media adoption has become within the business community.

The report, which included state-of-the-art infographics and social media visualization from award-winning creative marketing agency Oxford Communications, measured activity across major social networks, including Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter. The rankings in the report are based on the NetProspex Social Index (NPSI), a score comprised of several factors, including social connectedness (the number of employees with social media profiles), social friendliness and reach (the average number of connections per employee across major social networks), and social activity (the average number of tweets, number of followers and number of following).

Notable findings in the NetProspex Fall Social Media Report include:

  • Google Leads the Way: The companies with the highest overall score represent the most well-rounded social media presence among employees. Google topped the list as #1, with Microsoft and Amazon earning the second and third rankings, respectively.

  • Search Engines & Online Portals Tops Industry List: The Search Engines & Online Portals industry was ranked #1 of the Top 50 most social media-savvy industries in the US.

  • Marketing and Advertising Pros Are the Most Social: Marketing, advertising and communications professionals ranked among the most social media-savvy employees in the U.S., with CMO's and Advertising Directors/VP's earning the top spot on the list. Communications managers/directors/VP's ranked right behind them on the list, finishing third.

  • CEOs Not Engaged: CEOs did not break the top 10 of the report's job titles category. Customer service reps finished two places higher in the rankings.

  • Silicon Valley Reigns Supreme: San Francisco and San Jose are the #1 and #2 most social media-savvy cities in the US, respectively

  • West Coast More Social Media-Savvy than East Coast: West coast cities are far ahead of east coast when it comes to social media usage. San Jose, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Denver and Seattle all cracked the Top 10 list, while NYC and Boston were the only two east coast cities making the Top 10.
