RESTON, Va., June 30, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Leidos (NYSE: LDOS), a national security, health, and engineering solutions company, received the Champions of Veteran Enterprise award and was formerly recognized at the 2014 Veteran Entrepreneur Symposium (VETS) for the company's significant actions to increase contracting or subcontracting opportunities for veterans.

The National Veteran Small Business Coalition (NVSBC) Champions of Veteran Enterprise award recognizes federal agencies and prime contractors that meet or exceed the Congressionally-mandated goal of providing opportunities to veteran-owned and service-disabled veteran-owned small businesses. NVSBC's mission is to transition veterans into business owners and ensures that veteran businesses are given first consideration for federal prime and subcontracting procurement opportunities.

Leidos is being recognized for exceeding the three percent mandated subcontracting goal for service-disabled veteran-owned small businesses.  For government fiscal year 2013, Leidos awarded 6.6% to service-disabled veteran-owned small businesses and 13% to veteran-owned small businesses of its total federal subcontract dollars.  Additionally, Leidos has focused on cultivating meaningful relationships with veteran-owned and service-disabled veteran-owned small businesses by providing training in lowest price technically acceptable (LPTA), business development, and proposal development at no cost in 2013.  Moreover, Leidos has mentored nearly 20 veteran-owned small businesses under the Department of Defense and civilian agency mentor-protege agreements. Currently, Leidos is mentoring four service-disabled veteran-owned small businesses.

"We believe veteran-owned small businesses bring the needed capabilities and subject matter expertise to enable Leidos to better serve our customers and their missions," said John Jumper, Leidos chief executive officer and chairman of the board. "We are particularly honored to receive this award as it is a recognition of our company's commitment to work with those who have made the sacrifice to serve and continue to serve our country."

Recipients of the award were honored at the Champions of Veteran Enterprise awards luncheon on June 17 in Reno, Nev. during the 2014 VETS. Please visit www.veterantrainingsymposium.com for more information.
