AT&T Connecticut, Connecticut Department Of Transportation Partner To Bring Nationally-Recognized Distracted Driving Program To Connecticut High Schools

NEW HAVEN, Conn., Sept. 19, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- In an ongoing and robust effort to prevent roadway fatalities and injuries related to distracted driving, the Connecticut Department of Transportation's Highway Safety Office, in partnership with AT&T* Connecticut, is once again bringing the highly acclaimed "Save a Life Tour" Distracted Driving Program to Connecticut high schools for the 2014-2015 school year.

The DOT's "Save a Life Tour" is a high-impact distracted driving program geared specifically for teens. This multimedia event features the AT&T documentary, "From One Second to the Next," directed by acclaimed filmmaker Werner Herzog. The documentary highlights real stories of those who have had to face the devastating consequences that are caused by distracted driving.

"We're proud that last school year we were able to reach so many schools and young drivers with this life-saving message," said DOT Commissioner James Redeker. "We know that drivers under 20 have the highest proportion of fatal crashes caused by distracted driving and welcome the opportunity to reach even more students with this important message this school year."

It is the goal of the Connecticut Department of Transportation's Highway Safety Office to bring this program to every Connecticut high school interested in hosting over the next several years. The "Save a Life Tour" visited over 30 Connecticut high schools and presented the program to more than 15,000 students during the 2013-14 school year and is expected to reach over 60 schools during the 2014-15 school year.

While anything that takes a driver's eyes off the road, hands off the wheel, or mind off the task of driving is a hazard, there is heightened concern about the risks of texting while driving because it combines all three types of distraction – visual, manual and cognitive.

"AT&T Connecticut is pleased to continue our partnership with the Connecticut Department of Transportation's 'Save a Life Tour' by helping educate young drivers about the dangers of texting while driving," said AT&T Connecticut President John Emra. "Whether it's texting, talking, emailing or any other activity that may take a driver's full attention from the road, drivers need to put their devices away to avoid unnecessary distractions. It can wait."
