America Haunts Members Band Together to Scare Off Bullies

KANSAS CITY, Mo., Oct. 24, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Members of America Haunts, an association of elite haunted attractions throughout the United States, are known for being the best at scaring people for fun and entertainment. But a dozen of them across the country are also scaring for a good cause: to help end bullying.

In honor of National Anti-Bullying Prevention Month, several members have partnered with "Don't Be A Monster," an educational non-profit organization that teaches middle and high school students about diversity, inclusiveness and standing up for friends and peers. The message is presented at no cost to schools, and includes videos and appearance by "Frank," the organization's Frankenstein-themed character.

"Monsters are created, but bullies are real," said Jon Love of America Haunts. "Kids shouldn't be scared to go to school to avoid a bully. This campaign is our way of helping deliver a positive message in a way students will remember and talk about long after we've gone home."

Anti-bullying campaigns are not the only ways America Haunts members are giving back in their communities.  Other initiatives include:

  • Archdale, N.C.: Kersey Valley Spookywoods offers discounts for military members and their families.
  • Baton Rouge, La.: The 13th Gate is collecting blood weekly for The Blood Center of New Orleans.
  • San Diego, Calif.: The Haunted Hotel and The Scream Zone offer local schools the opportunity to host fundraising events at its location.

"As a business that is so connected to the communities in which we work, America Haunts members are always looking for creative ways to give back to the communities that support our attractions," Love said.  "Sure, we like nothing more than scaring half to death, but we have a heart, too."
