20 Veterans And Their Families Get The Gift Of Homeownership In 2014

ATLANTA, Nov. 11, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Veterans and their families across the country are realizing the dream of homeownership today as PulteGroup's Built to Honor program is pleased to announce it has reached its goal of building a new home for 20 veterans and their families.

PulteGroup's Built to Honor program was launched in 2013 to recognize and thank returning military personnel who have been injured during their term of service by providing mortgage-free homes to veterans and their families.

Today, on Veteran's Day, Built to Honor dedicated a 2,150 sq. ft. home to Lance Cpl. Ceontre Shelton and his family in Houston.  Additionally, Sgt. Christopher Powell in Austin was surprised with the news he is a recipient of a new home that will be ready in early 2015, and Corporal John Hootsell and his wife Brandie will receive the keys to a new home in Fort Worth tomorrow.  With two more surprise announcements expected by the end of 2014, Built to Honor will achieve its goal of gifting a home to 20 veterans and their families.

According to Richard Dugas, PulteGroup's Chairman, President and CEO, more than two million men and women have served our country in Iraq and Afghanistan with one in four having a service-connected disability.

"These valiant heroes return home to confront serious challenges and the best way we can make a difference in their lives is by doing what PulteGroup does best – building homes – as a way to honor and thank them for their service.  For all of us here at PulteGroup, it's truly bringing our vision to life by making lives better."

"Not only have our employees embraced these veterans as their own, but our suppliers and construction trade partners are going above and beyond," Dugas added.  "This could not be possible without their generosity of donating time, materials and financial resources to ensure that each Built to Honor home meets the specific needs of each veteran and his or her family."

From PulteGroup's construction team to its Interiors Design Group, PulteGroup employees work with the veteran and their family to customize the home to meet their specific needs.  For instance, for one veteran who suffers migraines, a private darkening room was added in lieu of a formal dining room to minimize the aggravation of migraine symptoms.  In another home, special interior changes were made to help ensure the home best meets the veterans' current and future needs.  Custom improvements included: widening of doorways throughout; moving the laundry room to the first level; zero-entries from the doors and garage; and a special walk-in shower.

PulteGroup's Divisions across the country have enthusiastically committed to build a home for a worthy veteran and their family and have already delivered homes in the following markets: Albuquerque, Atlanta, Detroit, Houston, Las Vegas, Nashville, Phoenix, Raleigh, San Antonio, Sarasota, and Tampa.  Homes already announced and under construction have started near Chicago, Florence, New Jersey and Beaufort, South Carolina.
