Fattah Statement on New Diplomatic Relations with Cuba

WASHINGTON, Dec. 17, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Congressman Chaka Fattah (D-PA) released the following statement in support of President Obama's announcement that he will pursue new diplomatic relations with Cuba. Since his early days in Congress, Fattah has been a co-sponsor of legislation to lift the travel and trade bans with Cuba. He has also worked with members of the Congressional Black Caucus on efforts to increase diplomatic relations with the country:

"Today, the President laid out a new approach for the United States' relationship with Cuba. I fully support his decision to end the outdated policies that have been in effect for more than five decades and pursue diplomatic relations with the Cuban government. Further, I applaud this Administration's tireless efforts and their success in securing the release of U.S. citizen Alan Gross and an essential American intelligence agent who was held in prison for nearly 20 years.

"These prisoner releases have brought renewed hope that we can successfully overcome the strained relationship between our two countries and usher in a new era of engagement.  As one of our closest neighbors, a strengthened diplomatic relationship with Cuba would serve the interests of both countries. When Congress returns in January, I look forward to working with my colleagues to further these diplomatic efforts by passing legislation to lift the longstanding trade embargo."
