Analyst Update: Grants, Quarterly Earnings, and Appointments

Reviewed by: Rohit Tuli, CFA®

U.S. stocks closed effectively flat in a relatively quiet trading session on Wednesday, February 11, as investors fixed their eyes on the developments of an emergency meeting of the eurozone countries to discuss Greece's finances. S&P 500 closed flat at 2,068.53, the Dow Jones Industrial Average edged lower 0.04% to 17,862.14 and Nasdaq Composite moved up 0.3% to close at 4,801.18. The European markets closed lower as investors awaited the outcome of the crucial meeting over financial aid to Greece, part of the several meetings scheduled over the coming days to decide the future of financial aid to Greece. The Asian markets ended mostly higher following a firm finish of global stocks on the preceding day, as well as driven by hopes for a deal between Greece and its international creditors.

New York-based specialty insurance provider Assurant, Inc. (Assurant) announced that its health insurance unit Assurant Health will support the Milwaukee community by providing grants and scholarships worth $240,000 to eight local agencies that address hunger, homelessness, and health and wellness for at-risk children and youth.

CNO Financial Group, Inc. (CNO Financial) reported lower operating earnings and net income in Q4 2014, reflecting an unfavorable after-tax mark-to-market change in the agent deferred compensation plan liability which was impacted by the use of a new mortality table and the low interest rate environment.

StanCorp Financial Group, Inc. (StanCorp) has reported a drop in the fourth quarter 2014 net income as premiums and net investment income declined, but managed to top the market expectations. StanCorp's net income in the quarter was $56.2 million, or $1.32 per diluted share, compared to $65.0 million, or $1.46 per diluted share, in the year ago period.

Triple-S Management Corporation (Triple-S) announced the appointment of Madeline Hernández-Urquiza as the President and CEO of Triple-S Advantage, Inc. ("Advantage"), the Company's Medicare Advantage operating subsidiary.

Unum Group (Unum) reported fourth quarter 2014 results that beat the market expectations, helped by solid margins in its core businesses and premium income growth. Separately, the Company also announced that CEO Thomas Watjen has decided to retire from his position at the Company's 2015 Annual Meeting.
