HITCHCOCK, Texas, April 17, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Habitat for Horses today announced the receipt of a $14,000 grant, awarded by the ASPCA Equine Fund to assist in the extraordinary costs incurred by the seizure of 28 starving equines, taken to the safety of Habitat for Horses on January 22nd. The court awarded permanent custody of the equine to Habitat for Horses.
"It is hard to overstate how important this grant is to us," said Rebecca Williams, Executive Director of Habitat for Horses. "The funding provided by the ASPCA will specifically be used to cover the first six months of feed, and also farrier and dental care."
"We are hoping that this grant inspires the public to donate for the second six months of care," stated Jerry Finch, Board President. "It is only by trusting that the public will step forward that we are able to unhesitatingly say "YES" to calls for help from law enforcement, even when it is a cruelty seizure of this magnitude. Undoubtedly, many of these horses will need to remain in permanent sanctuary with us."

The equines were taken from Terri Glenn, who owns S-n-G Horseback Riding on Galveston Island. The initial trial for Glenn was Friday, January 30th. Glenn was ordered to pay nearly $7,000. Glenn's criminal sentencing is pending. There were 26 horses and 2 mules rescued. Sadly, one horse had to be euthanized on January 31st, for humane reasons, despite intensive care hospitalization. Another suffered the same fate later. Such severe starvation is difficult to survive, but the remainder of the horses and mules are expected to recover.
