National Stroke Association Launches Interactive Nutrition Portal FoodSmarts?

DENVER, Jul. 27, 2015 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- FoodSmarts℠, an interactive nutrition portal, was launched today by National Stroke Association. FoodSmarts℠ provides personalized nutrition guidance on recipes, grocery store items and local restaurants to help in choosing foods that will help reduce risk for stroke.

FoodSmarts℠ is designed to help people manage all of their nutritional needs in a simple, easy-to-use tool. Users log in and create a profile that includes their various food preferences and health conditions such as diabetes, hypertension and/or stroke disease. Healthy eating habits are critical for those who have stroke, and are key in preventing stroke.

The platform allows users to search for recipes, ingredients and effectively plan meals that fit their personal nutrition needs. Recipes, packaged foods and national restaurant chain dishes will be easily identified as appropriate or inappropriate choices for each individual, based on his or her unique profile. Users can also add their own recipes, build shopping lists and create a personalized recipe box. FoodSmarts℠ includes a database of recipes and restaurant dishes that are all analyzed for each individual.

"It can be challenging to find the right foods to fit  every individual's dietary needs and that is why  we are excited to expand our resources with this tool to help stroke survivors, their families as well as the thousands who are at risk for stroke simplify the process," said Anna Taylor, Director, Awareness and Professional Programs, National Stroke Association.  "

FoodSmarts℠ is accessible online at foodsmarts.stroke.org as well as via a mobile app. Online accounts sync with the mobile app, which is available in the iPhone, and Google Play stores. Through a partnership with FoodCare®, Registered Dietitians are able to provide advanced nutrition guidance to make using FoodSmarts℠ even more personalized.
