Brands Respond to SCOTUS Gay Marriage Ruling on Twitter, Show Vast Support

DALLAS, Jul. 27, 2015 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Last month, the United States Supreme Court issued a monumental ruling making it legal for same-sex couples to marry nationwide. The historic decision is deemed a huge victory for gay rights activists who have long fought for the right to marriage equality in lower courts across the country.

How the ruling will impact things like the financial circumstances of same sex couples in terms of qualifying for benefits or types of legal recognition denied to them prior to the ruling, the rights of those seeking to exercise religious freedom, and social views regarding the LGBT community have recently been widely discussed among various groups. Related discussions have even been had in business and marketing circles as well, particularly regarding the impact the ruling will have on how companies will market their brands going forward when it comes to social matters.

One of the most unanticipated results of the ruling has been the outpouring of support of it by brands on social networks. Many business marketers recognized the benefit of finding unique and creative ways to show corporate brand support of the ruling, to connect with LGBT consumers on social media outlets like Twitter.

Progressive Social Attitudes of Business Brands

Dallas based marketing expert Qamar Zaman, who is CEO of online press release distribution company Submit Press Release 123, suggests that many brands have been smart to embrace progressive thinking in society not just because it promotes social tolerance and acceptance, but also as a great business move. According to Zaman, "when consumers see that brands recognize their struggles in society, and value things like marriage equality, it enables them to feel they are more than a dollar sign to businesses. They feel a human connection that motivates them to support these brands."

Zaman says that many brands connected with their Twitter followers in creatively unique ways. Among the top three standouts named by the marketing expert are:

  • American Airlines - The company posted "We're on board. Diversity strengthens us all & today we celebrate #MarriageEquality & the landmark #SCOTUS decision" as a caption to a picture of plane passenger seats with television screens showing rainbows.

  • Cheerios - The company, which sparked controversy being among the first to feature an interracial couple in a commercial TV ad, posted a picture of it's signature cereal box look with the words "Love is Love" along with the caption "And now, no one can tell you otherwise. #LoveWins."

  • Gatorade - The sports drink maker made a simple, yet bold statement by featuring an image of it's signature drink in rainbow flavor along with #LoveWins as the caption.

Many brands also jumped on the bandwagon in using the #LoveWins hashtag to show their support of the ruling. Says Zaman "the recent outpouring of support helps give the term brand awareness a whole new meaning."
