Hispanic Scholarship Fund Kicks Off Its National College Camp Series In Chicago

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 12, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF), the nation's largest not-for-profit organization supporting Hispanic American higher education, in a continuing joint effort with Wells Fargo, today announced the commencement of its annual College Camp series at the University of Chicago on September 12, 2015.

College Camps are free, bilingual, half-day, college and financial aid workshops specifically designed to help middle and high school students – and their parents – prepare, plan, and pay for college. Following the series kickoff in Chicago, additional College Camp workshops will be held in Chicago, Washington, D.C., Southern California, Northern California, Dallas, and Miami.

"In addition to giving scholarships to students, HSF also provides critical resources and information to the entire community on what it takes to prepare for a college track," said Fidel A. Vargas, President & CEO, Hispanic Scholarship Fund. "The College Camp series provides unique, live, interactive opportunities for students and parents to get information in a collegial setting where they can learn, ask questions, and interact with a variety of experts in a range of relevant fields."

"The College Camp Series and our partnership with Hispanic Scholarship Fund allow Wells Fargo the opportunity to help Hispanic students reach their full potential," said Georgette "GiGi" Dixon, Wells Fargo's Director of Strategic Partnerships. "We are committed to continuing our work with HSF and continuing to help Hispanic students gain access to higher education."

Led by experienced professionals, community leaders, and various business executives, the College Camp workshops provide guidance on topics, such as, preparing for and applying to college, choosing a college that's the right fit, writing a personal statement, researching financial aid and scholarship opportunities, and understanding the real cost of a college education.  HSF also indicates that the program has been revitalized with materials prepared by college admissions professionals to add an insider's perspective on applying to and attending college.

"This is a very important event for us. It educates us - as parents - on how to go about helping our children," said a parent participant from Dallas, Texas about a College Camp session she attended.

"I was really worried about whether I could pay for college and whether I was going to be able to finish," said a student participant in one of last year's College Camp events. "But, I learned that I can go to college and finish!"
