New Kickstarter: Fun Career Crates Inspire Girls in STEM & Leadership

BOSTON, Nov. 27, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Little Ms. Crate has announced its much anticipated Kickstarter campaign, launching their subscription crate service for elementary aged girls, which uses educational play to acquaint them with careers and women role models in the fields of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) and Leadership. The campaign includes limited quantities of Black Friday rewards, including the inaugural Little Ms. CEO crate, which will ship in time for the holidays. Regular subscriptions, which are scheduled to begin in March 2016, are also available as rewards to backers of its Kickstarter campaign.

The idea was conceived in early 2014, while newly expectant dad and Little Ms. Crate founder, Reid Craig III, was daydreaming about what life would be like if he and his wife got the daughter he wanted. At the same time, he was grappling with the realization that his round-the-clock workday as a tech executive and frequent flyer at a fast-paced software startup would not be compatible with the type of parent he intended to be. When his wife gave birth to their daughter in September 2014, he quit his job as Vice President so he could spend a few days each week as a stay-at-home dad and focus the rest on making Little Ms. Crate a reality.

"As a parent, Little Ms. Crate is the product I want for my little girl," Craig says. "Society will be sure to let her know that she can be an actress, or a singer, or a veterinarian, but I want her to know that she can be an astrophysicist, or a CEO, or a tissue engineer, too. I want her to have fun playing at those professions with all of her friends. Now that we've launched our Kickstarter campaign, everyone can share that knowledge and fun with their favorite little girl."

Women only make up about 25% of the STEM workforce, about 15% of all executive officers, and about 20% of Congress, despite accounting for more than ½ of the overall workforce and earning the majority of bachelor's degrees in the last decade.
