GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., June 17, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Michigan Virtual Charter Academy (MVCA), a tuition-free, online public charter school authorized by Grand Valley State University, will honor the Class of 2016 on Saturday, June 18, at Frederick Meijer Gardens in Grand Rapids. This year, more than 150 students, including 11 who finished early in January, will receive their high school diploma as part of MVCA's largest graduating class to date.
Among those graduating from MVCA this year are Rebecca Masis, who received a full, four-year scholarship to Hope College where she plans to study Social Work, and Michael Menghini, a trained ballet dancer who has been offered a contract to join the Charlotte Ballet Company in North Carolina.
"This is an especially exciting graduation year for us, as we recognize our largest graduating class," said Andrei Nichols, Interim Head of School at Michigan Virtual Charter Academy. "Our graduates have succeeded with our online program and unique individualized approach, which allows teachers and staff to work closely with each student to develop the skills needed for college and beyond."
Members of the Class of 2016 plan to pursue higher education at institutions across the state, including Great Lakes Christian College, Central Michigan University, Northwestern Michigan College and Baker College.

"The flexibility afforded by online schooling allowed me to pursue my passion for dance, while maintaining a full workload. More importantly, the one-on-one attention from my teachers provided me with the guidance and support I needed to meet my goals."
The keynote speaker will be Raymond Gant, founder of the Office of Minority Student Affairs at Ferris State University. For more than 30 years, Gant has served the educational community by developing a variety of campus-wide initiatives and activities while serving as the key voice and resource on education and diversity related issues.
MVCA's hands-on curriculum includes the support of Michigan-certified teachers, who are available online, by phone and, at the high school level, in-person at a learning center.
MVCA provides courses in language arts/English, math, science, history, world languages, art and music, as well as elective and Advanced Placement® courses for high school students. At MVCA, college- or career-minded students can choose from a broad range of profession-focused courses in order to gain a competitive edge for the future, discover their path after high school or explore a possible college major.
