Microsemi Achieves MEF CE 2.0 Certification with its VSC7468 Carrier Ethernet Switch

ALISO VIEJO, Calif., Oct. 6, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Microsemi Corporation (Nasdaq: MSCC), a leading provider of semiconductor solutions differentiated by power, security, reliability and performance, today announced it has achieved MEF Carrier Ethernet (CE) 2.0 certification with its VSC7468 Jaguar-2 carrier Ethernet switch using the company's CEServices software package on the Linux operating system. Microsemi's newly certified Ethernet switch and software solution enables networking equipment solutions such as Ethernet Access Devices (EAD) that can deliver Ethernet services readily compliant to a global standard. According to market research firm IHS, worldwide EAD revenue reached close to $1 billion in 2015, up 4 percent over 2014, and will hit $1.36 billion in 2020 for a 2015-2020 compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7 percent.

Microsemi Corporation

"This certification from MEF validates Microsemi's ability to deliver both differentiated silicon and software in a solution ideally suited for carrier Ethernet applications," said Larry O'Connell, Microsemi's product line director for Ethernet switching and software. "This proven, turnkey solution accelerates time to market for our customers and reduces any barriers for new customers to engage with our hardware and software solutions."

The MEF, founded in 2001 as the Metro Ethernet Forum, is a nonprofit international industry consortium dedicated to adoption of carrier Ethernet networks and services. The MEF CE 2.0 standard enables the global growth of the market and revenue opportunities by offering new services and certification standards for delivering interoperable Ethernet products and services. In addition, the certification is quickly becoming the industry standard equipment vendors must achieve in order to secure business amongst top service providers, as it delivers product and service interoperability assurance.

Microsemi's newly certified VSC7468 Jaguar-2 is complemented by other members of the company's latest generation carrier Ethernet switch family, including VSC7436 (Serval-2 Lite), VSC7438 (Serval-2), and VSC7464 (LynX-2). Each comes with Microsemi's CEServices applications software package, an extensive suite of carrier Ethernet and multiprotocol label switching - transport profile (MPLS-TP) networking protocols to reduce network equipment manufacturers' development costs and time to market. The product family is ideal for a wide variety of applications in the communications market, including carrier Ethernet, EAD/network interface devices (NID) and mobile backhaul. The EAD market is driven by carrier Ethernet connections for three main applications: backhaul from business buildings and digital subscriber line access multiplexers (DSLAMs), mobile backhaul, and wholesale carrier to carrier.

Microsemi provides Ethernet switches with its Virtualized Service Aware Architecture (ViSAA™), a silicon implementation that offers an unmatched level of service edge and carrier Ethernet networking features—resulting in the lowest power and highest performing solutions. Capabilities include:

  • Service classification and policing to meet advanced service level agreements (SLAs)
  • Performance monitoring and service activation measurements (RFC2544, Y.1731 and Y.1564)
  • Multi-operator operations, administration and maintenance (OAM), up and down maintenance end points (MEPs) support in hardware
  • Synchronous Ethernet (SyncE) and IEEE 1588v2 PTP protocol support with Microsemi's VeriTime technology for the highest accuracy IEEE 1588v2 timestamping
