PHILADELPHIA, Nov. 24 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Urban League of Philadelphia will salute community leaders who have provided their time, talent and resources to advancing the organizations mission of empowering African Americans to secure economic self-reliance, parity, power and civil rights at the 6th Annual Whitney M. Young Jr. Community Empowerment Awards Luncheon. The luncheon will take place on Friday, December 5, 2008 from 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm at the LOEWS Hotel, 1200 Market Street, Millennium Hall, 2nd floor, Philadelphia, PA 19107.

The panel discussion, The Urban Agenda: Digital - Green - Sustainable, will be moderated by Councilwoman Blondell Reynolds Brown. The panelists are Dr. Arlene Ackerman, Superintendent, Philadelphia School District; Calvin B. Johnson, M.D., M.P.H., Vice President and Chief Medical Officer, Temple University Health System; Earle Jones, Vice President/Federal Affairs, Comcast Eastern Division; Victoria Wilson, Chief Operating Officer, Universal Companies; and Patricia Smith, Esq., Director of Special Initiatives, The Reinvestment Fund.

The Whitney M. Young Jr. Empowerment Awards Luncheon was named after the fourth President of The National Urban League who in 1961 brought the League into the Civil Rights era by playing a critical role in meshing the tenets of Civil Rights activism with the practices of social and economic development.
