CHICAGO, Feb. 4 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The American Dietetic Association commended Congress and President Obama Wednesday, February 4, for enacting the State Children's Health Insurance Program into law.

The $32.6 billion legislation, similar to a bill vetoed by President Bush in 2007, expands government health coverage for children who do not qualify for Medicaid services, but who also cannot afford private medical insurance.

"Congress and the President today have demonstrated a positive commitment to children and health care that we are confident will continue throughout the 111th Congress," said registered dietitian and American Dietetic Association President Martin M. Yadrick.

It is estimated the expansion of SCHIP will cover 11 million children, 4 million more than in 2008, including legal immigrants for the first time.

The bill extends funding to the SCHIP program that was set to expire at the end of March for another 4 1/2 years and is being financed with a 61-cent tax on cigarette packs.

The Senate passed the bill Wednesday, following the House of Representatives' approval in January.

"It is noteworthy that the SCHIP legislation the president signed today includes new nutrition services and obesity treatment that includes medical nutrition therapy," Yadrick said.
