DALLAS, June 19 /PRNewswire/ -- The Texas Employee Confidence Index increased for the third consecutive month, inching up 3.0 points to 53.8 in May, according to the latest Spherion(R) Employment Report. The monthly survey of Texas workers, conducted by Harris Interactive(R) on behalf of Spherion Corporation, reveals that fewer workers continue to believe the economy is getting weaker and more are confident in their ability to find a new job.
Results from the Texas Employment Report:
- Thirty-two percent of workers believe the economy is getting weaker, showing a decline of 10 percentage points from April.
- Fifty-eight percent of Texas workers believe fewer jobs are available, compared to 70 percent in the previous month.
- More workers are confident in their ability to find a new job. Specifically, half of workers (50 percent) surveyed are confident in their ability to find a new job versus 45 percent in April.
"Although unemployment continues to rise, the Texas jobless rate continues to remain well below the national average. We are seeing signs in our market and among leading indicators that the economic downturn appears to be slowing down," said Kim Lockhart, regional vice president for Spherion in Texas. "While it is too soon to label this as a lasting trend, we are hearing that more companies are revisiting their staffing needs. In fact, we are seeing some activity in industries such as real estate, mortgage, energy and non-clinical healthcare. With historically large candidate pools, many companies are looking towards utilizing a contingent workforce to fulfill their business needs without making long-term hiring decisions."
