Coveted National Award For Fast-Growing Inner-City Companies Received By Detroit-Based Caterer And Food Service Company Edibles Rex

DETROIT, May 9, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Detroit-based catering and food services company, Edibles Rex has received a coveted national award given to the top 100 fastest growing companies located in American inner cities. Edibles Rex was chosen from a group of more than 1,000 nominees from a range of different industries by the Initiative for a Competitive Inner City (ICIC) Inner City 100 award committee. Past winners have included such household names as Pandora, American Apparel and Angie's List.

Launched from the 700-square-foot carry-out deli "The Silver Spoon" in 1994 by entrepreneur Tammy Tedesco, Edibles Rex has grown to an 80-employee full service catering, wholesale and food service company with a 7,000 square foot kitchen on the east side of Detroit. The company planned for further expansion in 2010, when it purchased a five-acre parcel in Detroit's historic Eastern Market at the corner of Mack and Orleans, which will serve as Edibles Rex new home.

"We're thrilled and honored to have been selected by the ICIC for this prestigious award," Tedesco said. "Our mission, at its core, is to grow our business in a way that allows our community to grow too.

"We're proud to use Michigan-based suppliers, to hire hard-working Detroiters and to make healthy, locally sourced food available through our catering and school services divisions," she said.

The ICIC was founded in 1994 by Harvard Business School professor Michael Porter with the goal to help businesses thrive within inner city communities. In addition to recognizing the top growing inner city companies in the nation, the ICIC also aims to provide business and governments with the knowledge and information they'll need to help spur economic development in urban areas.

"We congratulate Edibles Rex on this well-deserved recognition," said Detroit Economic Growth Corporation Business Retention Manager Kenyetta Hariston Bridges. "Companies like Edibles Rex are contributing to a stronger Detroit, and we were happy to support their nomination to the ICIC Inner City 100 award committee."

Edibles Rex will receive its award at the ICIC Symposium, held today at the Harvard Business School and Sheraton Boston. The rankings of the Inner City 100 finalists will be presented during the ceremony by its national media partner, Fortune Magazine, which will also publish a featured article highlighting the Inner City 100 winners.
