Job Growth Surge at Mercy College

As Mercy College celebrates its 60-year anniversary, it announces an unprecedented increase in both job growth and enrollment. During the past two academic years, a total of 108 staff and faculty jobs have been added to serve a burgeoning student body.

For the 2009-2010 academic year, enrollment has reached more than 10,000 undergraduate and graduate students, the highest in the college’s history. This year’s enrollment also includes Mercy College’s highest number of full-time, first-time freshman, as well as the largest number of Honors students.

“Mercy College is experiencing a significant growth phase. As our success attracts more students, we have also been contributing to the local economy with jobs that support those students. These newly created jobs are a direct result of our enrollment growth,” said Dr. Kimberly R. Cline, president of Mercy College.

According to the New York State Department of Labor, the Westchester-Rockland-Putnam County region has lost private sector jobs between September 2009 and September 2010. The job growth at Mercy College reflects a welcome contrast to this regional trend.

“In this difficult economic environment, we are enormously pleased to contribute to our local community as a job provider,” added Dr. Cline.

The unique Mercy College PACT mentoring program is cited as the key differentiating factor in the enrollment increase, along with the expansion of in-demand degree programs taught by esteemed faculty and offered on five campuses.

PACT is a revolutionary, customized mentoring program designed to maximize student success. The program provides incoming freshman with professional, cross-trained mentors to help students navigate through all aspects of the college experience—from financial aid to finding internships. Together, students and mentors create individualized plans to facilitate academic excellence and skills development that will translate into career opportunities.

This year, more than 80 percent of eligible freshmen are participating in PACT, and new PACT mentors have been hired to help them make a successful transition into college.

In addition to PACT and other student support staff, the new positions also include faculty and executive-level institutional employees. With an increase of 16 percent in new jobs over the past two years—Mercy College is clearly in a robust expansion mode as it marks its 60th year of making high-quality, private education attainable.
