New AHA Market Scan Trailblazer report examines how artificial intelligence can streamline patient workflows, reduce administrative burden, and improve interoperability across healthcare systems

Concord Technologies, a leader in healthcare data exchange, interoperability, and intelligent document processing, today announced the release of a new Market Scan Trailblazer report developed in collaboration with the American Hospital Association (AHA), titled Applying AI to Achieve Interoperability and a Smarter Patient Workflow.

The report explores how healthcare organizations are increasingly turning to artificial intelligence to address one of the industry’s most persistent operational challenges: interoperability. According to a 2026 Concord Technologies survey highlighted in the report, 64% of hospital leaders believe AI will accelerate interoperability across the healthcare ecosystem, signaling a major shift in how provider organizations are approaching workflow modernization and patient information exchange.

The report examines how AI technologies can help healthcare organizations quickly recognize patterns, contextualize information, and extract relevant data from incoming documents and messages — enabling more efficient patient workflows and reducing the burden of manual processing.

“Healthcare organizations are under enormous pressure to improve operational efficiency while also delivering a better patient experience,” said Julie Freguia, Chief Marketing Officer at Concord. “What we’re seeing now is a shift from viewing AI as experimental technology to recognizing it as a practical tool for solving real interoperability and workflow challenges. This report highlights how healthcare leaders are beginning to apply AI in meaningful ways that reduce friction, accelerate information flow, and free staff to focus more directly on patient care.”

The report also includes a real-world case study featuring WakeMed, a nonprofit health system based in Raleigh, North Carolina. By deploying the Concord Connect™ platform and Concord’s Practical AI™ approach, WakeMed is transforming patient information processing within its contact center operations. The organization anticipates significant reductions in processing time for millions of incoming faxes, allowing staff to redirect more attention toward higher-value patient support and care coordination activities.

The findings build upon industry discussions initiated earlier this year during Concord Technologies’ interoperability panel at HIMSS 2026, moderated by the American Hospital Association, which examined the evolving role of artificial intelligence and large language models in healthcare interoperability.
