NuWay Business Solutions has published a new guide explaining why small businesses are overlooked by AI assistants like ChatGPT, and why NAP consistency matters more than schema markup or llms.txt files.

-- Brian Pawl, founder of NuWay Business Solutions, has published a new guide addressing why small businesses consistently fail to appear when someone asks ChatGPT or a similar AI tool for a local recommendation — and why the fix most vendors are selling is the wrong one.

The guide was written to correct a widespread misconception about how AI search actually works, a NuWay Business Solutions spokesperson said. "Most owners picture an AI that visits their website, decides it looks outdated, and moves on. That is not what is happening. The AI is mostly reading pages about your business that you did not write, and if those pages describe you differently from one another, the system has trouble confirming you even exist as a single entity."

The guide takes direct aim at an industry that has grown up around selling AI visibility fixes that Google's own documentation says are unnecessary. According to Google's published guidance on generative AI features, structured data is not required to appear in AI-generated responses, and neither are llms.txt files or any other machine-readable markup — because Google Search ignores them.

"The most important thing a business can do is make sure its basic facts are consistent across every place they appear online," a NuWay Business Solutions spokesperson said. "Name, phone number, address (NAP, what the business actually does. That is less exciting than a technical fix, and it is what actually moves the needle."

The guide also references data from Pew Research Center, which tracked the browsing behavior of 900 US adults through March 2025 and found that source links inside AI summaries were clicked on just 1% of visits to pages carrying those summaries — compared to 8% for ordinary search results. Pawl notes that, despite the limited direct traffic, an AI mention still carries value as a form of referral: the business name gets surfaced, and the potential customer often follows up through a direct search later.

The guide closes with a practical checklist for business owners, including a step involving a plain text file at the root of their website — which, according to OpenAI's documentation, directly determines whether a business appears in ChatGPT search results at all.
