Massachusetts Company Seeks to Change How Social Skills are Taught

LEXINGTON, MA / ACCESSWIRE / April 11, 2023 / A small startup in the Boston Metrowest area has been working the past year to teach social skills to teens and young adults through tabletop roleplaying games, and now they've set their sights on publishing their first book. In its first year, Guild Chronicles LLC, which runs educational gaming sessions for neurodivergent teens and young adults, has worked with dozens of participants to foster social-emotional development and build communication skills. The company hopes the publication of their book will allow for hundreds, if not thousands, of neurodivergent youth to benefit from the gaming and storytelling system.

Guild Chronicles is running their first Kickstarter campaign during Autism Acceptance Month this April to raise the funds to bring their first book to market. The campaign, which will run until April 21st, was fully-funded within the first 15 minutes, thanks to the dedication and generosity of the community. As Kickstarter funding continues to grow, the team aims to translate the rulebook into Spanish and to develop a version of the game for younger players.

The publication of the Guild Chronicles Core Rulebook is being headed up by a small team of passionate neurodivergent artists and educators, including Guild Chronicles' founder and game designer, Andrew Harris Schramme, M.Ed. As the game is primarily used in groups with autistic and ADHD kids and adults, it's important to Harris Schramme that this demographic is represented in the game's creation and development team.

"There is a huge pool of untapped neurodivergent talent in the gaming industry," notes Harris Schramme. "By assembling a neurodivergent team to create a fantastic game, we hope to [provide the representation we wish to see, and to] shake things up and show other companies by our example that this is a population they need to pay more attention to and support way more."

Guild Chronicles, LLC was founded in 2022 in Lexington Massachusetts and runs therapeutic group gaming sessions to improve social-emotional and communication skills amongst autistic adolescents and young adults. The Guild Chronicles program has been used for more than ten years in public and private schools, in out-patient hospital settings in Massachusetts, and as a part of Mass General Brigham's Aspire program. Guild Chronicles has been the subject of qualitative research and is currently the subject of a quantitative pilot study at UVA to assess its efficacy.

This summer, the team at Guild Chronicles is seeking to establish a non-profit organization to run games and educational events in the Greater Boston Area. They are also looking to set up a local chapter of the Autistic Self Advocacy Network to provide a space for neurodivergent youth and young adults to socialize.
